Elections and public togetherness

Today we had the chance to vote in the Australian Federal Election. It's an exciting time in our household, as we tend to be quite politically-minded. Some of the things I love most about voting include:

1. We live in Australia, where we are lucky enough to have the opportunity to vote for our country's leaders.

2. It is exciting to be a part of 'election fever' in the lead up to the big day.

3. With social media there are so many more ways to connect with others who have 'the election fever'. While watching The Drum on ABC the other night and following the twitter conversation at the same time, I saw my sister pop up. She lives 700 kms away but we were watching the same show at the same time, and having a conversation (with a few thousand other Aussies) on twitter, so it was as if we were closer than our geographical distance would permit.

4. The buzz and excitement down at the polling booth was fantastic. It was freezing weather, but everyone (no matter who they planned to vote for) was bonding over chatter and fundraising cupcakes as they huddled together in line. The principal of the school even came along and jovially took coffee orders for waiters.

5. I got an 'I voted' sticker afterwards.

Now, what does this have to do with Maken Art? I decided that election day was a perfect time to start my little project of sharing art anonymously. I made some little 'Happy Winter' cards and put them in mail boxes on my way to the polling place. I hope it will be a nice change from all the 'how to vote' cards we've been receiving lately.

  1. I agree with your comments on voting. We are so lucky to be able to do this freely and without fear. Love your idea of anonymous art what a beautiful way to bring beauty and joy into someone's life.
