Last year I conducted a series of tests on the
Sketchbook Project Moleskine books to see what mediums worked best. This year the Art House Co-op was kind enough to send me some blank sketchbooks so I could do even more testing on their new books.
Here are the tests I've conducted so far:

If you have any particular mediums you would like me to test, please let me know and I'll do my best. Coming up we have acrylic paint, watercolor, gesso, pastels, wax, transfer methods, stamps, different glues, and embroidery!

That's awesome!! Very good info to have at my fingertips. Thank you for the testing on the sketchbook paper!!
ReplyDeleteI didn't know that, thanks for the tips since i'll be joining in soon!
ReplyDeleteAll the paper test post are very informative and needed.
ReplyDeleteHave you tried Uniball and Pentel pens?
Melody
Hi Melody, I will see if I can get my hands on some.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for doing this. I'm so afraid of messing mine up. :)
ReplyDeleteAny chance you could try some Neocolor II crayons?
And what about matt mediums and gels? How does it hold up to that?
Thank you again.
Hi Susan, I think the gesso should be fairly similar to the matt mediums. I'm having a lot of trouble sourcing some requested materials in Australia. Haven't seen the Neocolor crayons but I'll keep looking. (Can't even get a lot of stuff shipped here unfortunately).
ReplyDeleteThanks for the quick reply. I forgot about how hard it can be for you to get some US supplies in OZ. I'll keep checking back and see what new things you try out. I'm a newbie artist so a bit scared about the whole project but also very excited.
ReplyDeleteI've just about blown through the paper the Art House gave me for testing, so I'm going to have to work out a way to test a lot of things in a small space!
ReplyDeleteThanks for doing this. I think the paper looks much better than last year's. I have linked to you and this post on my blog http://itsamadeupthing.blogspot.com/.
ReplyDeleteIf you ever need any special or "unavailable" materials in Australia you should just ask your friendly art store staff. There is a lot they have available that is not on their shelves. Or simply just similar.
ReplyDeleteRe: neocolour crayons. I needed some for a class, and spent ages trying to find them here in Oz. You can get them at a store based in Brisbane called the Art Shed (http://www.artshedbrisbane.com.au/). Be warned, though, they're rather expensive if you want a large range of colours. The watersoluable ones (Neocolour II), at least, you can buy individually in store, so you could possibly call or email them and see if you could buy a few to try out rather than a whole set?
ReplyDeleteIs the paper thicker this year for 2012? And does watercolour work okay or will it bleed through too much?
ReplyDeleteAlso, I mran just simple/plain/generic watercolours
ReplyDeleteHi Nadia. The paper is a little thicker, but it's still not watercolor paper. The watercolors I used didn't really go through the paper, but they certainly did make it crinkly. Check out the tests I did here: Watercolor and Colored Pencil test I've used the media on both sides of the paper to show how it does or doesn't come through.
